Wedgwood Jasper ware is unique and, when Josiah Wedgwood perfected it in 1774,after many experiments it was possibly the most momentous innovation in ceramic history since the invention of porcelain nearly 1,000 years earlier. A stoneware which needs no glazing yet is still water-tight, the perfection of Jasper represents Wedgwood's greatest contribution to ceramic art. It is also considered one of Wedgwood's greatest challenges. The search began in 1771 and occupied most of Josiah Wedgwood's Waking hours, becoming an all-absorbing passion. In July 1774 he wrote, "At one time the body is white & fine as it shod be, the next we make...is a Cinnamon color - one time it is melted to a Glass, another time dry as Tobacco Pipe". Two years later he was still showing his frustration:"This Jasper is certainly the most delicately whimsical of any substance I ever engag'd with", It was not until November 1777 that Wedgwood was able to write to his partner, Thomas Bently,"I have tried my new mixing of Jasper and find it very good...Sell what quantities you please". Success had came, at last, after more than 10,000 experiments. From this time until his death in 1795, Josiah Wedgwood devoted much, of his boundless energy to producing a stunning variety of pieces form cameos, plaques, vases and portrait medallions to figures, chessmen, bowls, candlesticks and much more.Jasper ware has been produced in Stoke-on-Trent for more than 200 years and, although today's Jasper ware is produced using streamlined production techniques, in essence the methods are the same as those used by the first Josiah Wedgwood, with every bas-relief decoration being applied by hand. Contrary to popular belief, from the very earliest days this prized ware manufactured in a wide variety of colors. It is only comparatively recently that Jasper ware has been thought of as being white on pale "Wedgwood" blue. Today, you can choose from a very varied selection of Jasper items in several different colors. |
